What is the Difference Between Precious and Semi-Precious Stones?

Many societies continue to place a high value on gemstones, or ratna. These gems have historically been categorized as semi-precious and precious stones. They are referred to similarly in Western astrology; in Vedic astrology, semi-precious stones are termed “Upratnas,” while valuable jewels are called Mukhya ratna.
